3Rs Future of NHPs in Industry Working Group

Problem Statement

The final opinion of the Scientific Committee on Health Environmental and Emerging Risks titled “The need for non-human primates in biomedical research, production and testing of products and devices” (update 2017) was completed at the request of the Director General of the European Parliament, with the intent of informing debate within the European Parliament and the Council on the European Directive (Directive 2010/63/EU).  As a document, this has the potential to influence future discussions on the use of non-human primates in biomedical research and testing in the current time frame, and into the future.

Mission and Objectives

Develop a review white paper outlining basic areas of agreement, disagreement, and concerns with the Opinion, to be  used as a reference for future discussions on the use of non-human primates in research and testing.
